After Europe: Postcolonial Knowledge in the Age of Globalization

March 12, 2010

Keynote address: "Provincializing the World: Europeans, Indians, Jews (1704)"

Carlo Ginzburg, Scuola Normale di Pisa

2010 marked ten years since the publication of Dipesh Chakrabarty's highly influential and generative Provincializing Europe: Postcolonial Thought and Historical Difference. The moment therefore offered a unique opportunity to take stock, in the form of a one-day conference, of the book's many habitations over the past decade. The conference provided a venue in which to explore the varied influence of Provincializing Europe not only in South Asian history and postcolonial studies, but also in fields as diverse as medieval studies, European history, musicology, and African, Latin American and Australasian studies. The conference aimed to take stock of these multi-regional and multi-disciplinary conversations as well as to engage their future iterations.
